Sustainable Livelihoods Projects (Water & Agriculture)
About 80% of Kenya’s total land area is classified as Arid or Semi-Arid lands (ASALs), and it is characterized by low rainfall, hence persistent droughts due to Kenyas reliance on rain fed agriculture. These areas are home to over 35% of Kenya’s population, who often face water stress, lack of food and hence poverty. They are also some of the most unreached places. Since the start of the church, KAG has sought to respond the felt needs of the community, empowering the local churches to provide support to their communities. Since 2020 KAG has now drilled 150 deep wells and ongoing. The wells are kitted with solar powered pumps and storage tanks, creating a sustainable model for water provision to the communities of mostly northern and northeastern Kenya, eastern and the southern parts of Kenya.
Through water interventions, KAG is now directly supporting 80,000 households, and 550,000 people with clean water across Kenya, starting with the most vulnerable populations. The church is using the water to support livestock and agriculture to support sustainable livelihood among members of our church and their communities. Alleviating water scarcity in our communities and churches across Kenya and supporting churches to be at the center of the solutions not only boosts economic development but also helps in establishing lasting and resilient faith communities. With continued disruption of weather patterns, arid and semi-arid areas of Kenya will continue experiencing severe water shortages and food insecurity. There is a greater urgency to support households in these areas to provide pastoral and agricultural livestock with water, as these are their main sources of livelihood, even as we introduce new forms of agriculture to supplement their food supply. The church is one institution that ensures that there is shared access to water for all community members, fostering cooperation, unity, and social bonds. KAG has partnered with Assemblies of God World Mission (AGWM), Speed the Light, BGMC and WorldServe International in the realization of these impactful projects.
